Volume 1

Episode 01: Boy Going on Journey x Leaving a Sound of the Wind

A young, talented boy, Gon leaves Whale Island to search for his missing father - Jin Freaks, a legendary Hunter and a fabulous-sounding mixed drink - leaving behind Mito, one thoroughly depressed aunt.

Episode 02: Encounter x Intimidation x Departure

Enter Leorio, a bespectacled businessman, and Kurapica, a solemn, blonde kid whose eyes turn spookily red when he sees a spider. Gon latches onto the reluctant Leorio, and all three end up aboard a ship headed to Dole Island to start the Hunter exam.

Episode 03: Pride x Stormy Island x Duel

A storm strikes at sea and takes out more than half the Hunter contestants, while the captain of the ship (a Hunter) chucks the rest overboard. Leorio and Kurapica begin to fight, but Gon interrupts them to save a drowning crew member. At the end of the voyage, only Gon, Leorio and Kurapica remain.

Episode 04: Decision x Shortcut x Long Way

In Dole, our three team up with Mashu, a ne'er-do-well. They are trapped by a crone (a Hunter) who questions them: "Do you save your mother or your lover from certain death?" Mashu answers and is allowed to pass, while Leorio, Gon & Kurapica remain silent. The three are led to a secret path through the city.

Episode 05: Lie x Truth? x Kiriko

En route to Zaban City, the trio encounter two shape-shifting Rat-Foxes. Gon discovers that the seemingly evil shape-shifters are actually Navigators, who promise to lead our three to the Hunter examination building

Episode 06: Steak x Marathon x Exam Begins

Deep underground, Leorio, Kurapica & Gon are given admission numbers and meet the rest of the Hunter contestants. Examiner Satotsu introduces himself, and the First Exam begins: to follow him at a breakneck pace through the tunnel. After 30 minutes, Leorio falls behind. Contestant Tompa leads Leorio to a poisonous tree, and ditches him at the base.

Episode 07: Trauma x Limit x Sweet Trap

Gon and Kurapica check on Leorio, who's reliving his worst nightmare. Kurapica also falls under the tree's evil influence, leaving only Gon unaffected. Spiky-haired Killua joins them and blasts a hole in the wall to escape from the tree. Satotsu and the rest of the contestants catch up, and they all pass the First Exam.

Episode 08: Magician x Smile x Wild Animal Warning

Lethal clown Hisoka develops a taste for blood in the Numelle Marshes and starts killing off the weaker contestants. He's preparing to kill Leorio when Gon intervenes. Interested, Hisoka defeats Gon, then releases him, unharmed. He mentions that both Gon and Leorio "passed" his exam, and heads off into the woods with the unconscious Leorio slung over his shoulder.

Episode 09: Menchi x Seriously Pissed x Second Exam?

Epicurian Hunters Menchi and Buhara are in charge of the second exam. Buhara challenges the contestants to kill and roast Great Stump Pork found in the Biska Woods. Menchi's test is a bit more difficult: prepare nigri sushi to her exacting standards. Alas, none of the contestants besides Hanzo (the ninja from Japan) have even the foggiest idea of where to being. By the time they figure it out, Menchi has failed everyone.

Episode 10: Failing Score x Panic x Voice from Heaven

The group failure has been brought to the attention of Netero, the Hunter Examination Committee President. Forced to pick a fairer test, Menchi selects the retrieval and tasting of Tarantula Eagle eggs suspended above a deep chasm. The successful candidates board Netero's blimp and head off for their next test.

Episode 11: Explore x Sports Spirit x Stowaway

On the blimp, Gon and Killua head off to explore, and Killua confesses to Gon that his family (the Zoldicks; a.k.a. Zaoldyecks or Zodica) are all trained assassins. Netero finds them and challenges Gon & Killua to a one-on-one basketball contest, offering either one of them an instant Hunter license as incentive. Killua swiftly attacks, but is unable to defeat the wily President.

Episode 12: Good Boy? x Bad Boy? x Killua

Killua and Gon team up for a combined attack against Netero, which fails miserably. Killua resigns in disgust, while Gon launches a full-frontal assult on Netero. Netero dodges, and Gon ends up smashing his head own into a wall. He happily tells Netero that he only wanted to see Netero shift the ball from one hand to the other, not win the contest.

Episode 13: Agree x Disagree x Trap

The third exam is to make it off Trick Tower in three days. Our main four find a secret passage and are unwittingly teamed up with Tompa in a "majority rules" quest inside the tower. Halfway through, all five are forced to battle, one-on-one, with hardened criminals.

Episode 14: Candle x Policy x Internal Discord

Tompa quickly surrenders in his fight to the death with Bendotto, annoying his teammates to no end. Gon's test is deceptively easy: keep a candle lit longer than his pyromaniacal opponent, Sedokan. Gon wins by blowing Sedokan's candle out. Kurapica's test is against Majitani, a grotesquely malformed yet rather ineffectual criminal. Kurapica sees Majitani's giant spider tattooed on his back - the sign of the Genei Ryodan - and goes into a berzerker rage.

Episode 15: Transient x Life x Majitani

Meanwhile, Hisoka has neatly defeated his knife-wielding opponent and is the first to finish the Third Exam. Majitani has regained consciousness, but remains inert. Leorio investigates, holding the beatened criminal over a gaping pit. Majitani pinwheeling himself to safety, and quickly declares Kurapica the winner.

Volume 2

Episode 16: Rock x Scissor x Heart

Part of Leorio's test is to guess the gender of his fetching opponent, Leiluto. He deliberately fails, in order to win a grope (much to the exasperation of the rest of his team). Killua's test is a fight to the death against "body-ripper" Johnny (or Jones the Cutter, depending on the translation). While the others are pleading with him not to fight, Killua professionally rips out Johnny's heart.

Episode 17: Three People? x Five People? x Last Choice

After a 50 hour time-out, the team progresses to a weapon-lined room. The left exit will take 45 hours to complete. The right exit will take only 15 minutes, but only three of them will be able to take it. Gon eventually solves the problem: they all enter the tunnel for the slower passage, then chop their way through the wall into the shortcut. Hisoka is inexplicably amused.

Episode 18: Treasure x Memory x Hotel Room

The Hunter contestants are taken to a semi-deserted island for a bit of R&R, but are forced to search the surrounding sunken ships for treasure to pay for the rooms. In the middle of the night, the elderly couple desert the island, stranding all the contestants.

Episode 19: Separation x Diary x Water Inflow

Hanzo and Kurapica are elected temporary leaders on the island, while some Hunter contestants take off on their own. The First Wave hits and drowns those who set off alone. Gon discovers a ship diary and reads the coming of the Second Wave, which will completely flood the island in 24 hours.

Episode 20: Giant Wave x Cannon x Huge Rush

Working together, the remaining contestants manage to get a battleship up and running. Gon is thrown in the water and Kurapica knocked unconsious. With Kurapica out of commission, a mysterious long-haired man takes the helm of the ship, and Hisoka reaches in the water and saves Gon. All 24 contestants passed the exam.

Episode 21: 4th Exam x 44 x Number of Death

The next contest pits the contestants against each other for a week on Zebeile, a deserted island. Rippo explains that to win the contest, the opponents need to come up with six points by the end of five days. Gon trains to capture Hisoka's badge, while Gereta, Gon's opponent, observes him silently from the treetops.

Gon tracks Hisoka via vampire butterflies, attracted to fresh blood. Tompa tricks Leorio into losing his badge, but Kurapica defeats Tompa and retreives the badge. Leorio defeats Sommy (the Monkey Trainer), Kurapica's opponent. Gitarakuru reveals himself to Hisoka (and a hidden Gon) as the long-haired man from Treasure Island, and Hisoka starts hunting badges for points.

Episode 23: Hisoka x Crash x Gon

Hisoka threatenes Leorio and Kurapica for their badges, and Kurapica hands over their non-essential badge. Afterwards, Hisoka freaks out and starts stalking through the woods. Gon steals Hisoka's badge, but has his own (and Hisoka's) stolen by Gereta. Hisoka kills Gereta and returns both badges to Gon. Gon refuses to accept them, so Hisoka knocks him out. Hisoka tells Gon that he'll only accept the badge when Gon can return the blow.

Episode 24: Damage x Resume x Fake Smile

Gon spends a lousy night in the woods, paralyzed and full of self-recrimination. Killua's easily stolen his target's badge from the Amori Brothers. Leorio and Kurapica meet up with Gon, and go after Ponzu, Leorio's target. Gon tracks Ponzu to a cave. Leorio enters, and is quickly trapped. Gon and Kurapica join him shortly thereafter, and see Ponzu and Barbon also trapped in the cave.

Episode 25: Slimy x Stingy x Inside a Cave

Leorio has been poisoned by Barbon's snakes. Barbon is dead, killed (accidentally) by Ponzu. Gon searches Barbon for an antidote and buys sleeping gas off of Ponzu. Releasing the gas, Gon drags everyone outside. Leorio steals Ponzu's badge while she's unconscious just as the end of the test is announced.

Episode 26: President x Interview x Paper Test

On board the blimp, Netero tells the finalist that they have three days to relax before the final exam. Bodoro predicts that the next test will be a paper test on Hunter knowledge. Pokkoru, Hanzo and Leorio immediately start cramming. Netero questions the candidates individually, then composes a map narrowing down to only one final contestant for the Hunter exam.

Episode 27: Hisoka x Kurapica x The Spider's Whisper

The final exam begins: only one person will not become a Hunter. Kurapica and Hisoka are first up. After a particularly bloody round, an unarmed Hisoka approaches Kurapica and whispers something in his ear ("Concerning the Spider, I'm going to teach you some pretty interesting stuff.") Kurapica's eyes flare red, and Hisoka admits his defeat to the referee.

Episode 28: Chat x Excuses x Comparing Guts

Next up is Gon vs. Hanzo. While Gon gets in a few good blows, he's severely outclassed by Hanzo. Hanzo eventually blinds, deafens and breaks one of Gon's arms, but Gon still refuses to admit defeat. Hanzo not unkindly tells Gon that if he's dead, he won't be able to become a Hunter, but Gon still refuses to surrender. Enraged, Hanzo levels his ninja blade for the killing blow.

Episode 29: Passed! x Failed? x End of Exams

Hanzo resheaths his blade and perplexingly admits defeat. Gon refuses to accept the surrender, so Hanzo knocks out. Gon recovers in bed, two days later, to find the exam over and Satotsu handing him a Hunter badge. Gon missed Hisoka defeating Bodoro. He asks Satotsu about the one who didn't become Hunter.

Episode 30: Killua x Drop Out x Turn Back with Force

Flashing back, Killua surrenders to Pokkoru, but is defeated by Gitarakuru, who turns out to be Irumi, Killua's older brother. Irumi tells Killua that assassins will never be able to have any friends. Next up is Leorio vs.Bodoro. Just as the fight is beginning, Killua kills Bodoro, disqualifying himself from the Hunter examination.

Episode 31: Dismissed x Party x Enemies are Bound to Meet

Hisoka and Irumi are sharing a quiet, evil moment outside the competition. Hisoka tells Irumi in no uncertain terms to leave Gon alone. Irumi agrees, but later tries to kill Gon. Hisoka intervenes. That evening, the celebration party is in full swing: Menchi has been drinking too much, and Hanzo and Leorio are busy taking scandalous pictures of her. After the party, all the newly-christened Hunters depart, while the examiners quietly note that there is one final test for them to pass before they become true hunters.

Episode 32: Tour x Tourist Attraction x Killua's House

Leorio and Killua accompany Gon to retrieve Killua from the Zoldicks. At the imposing entrance to the Zoldick Mansion, they meet Zebulo, a security guard who feeds Miike, the gigantic guard dog of the Zoldick family. Zebulo tells them that the only way to enter is through the two-ton doors.

Episode 33: Training x Hound x Concerted Effort

Leorio, Kurapica and Gon are unable to budge the doors. Zebulo opens them and invites them to his cabin to train. In the cabin, everything is weighed down to build muscle. After a week of heavy labor, Leorio is able to open the main doors. Shortly thereafter, Killua and Gon also open them. All three bid farewell to Zebulo and start their trek to the main mansion.

Episode 39: Convene Skill x Register x The Fight Begins

With Wing's training, Gon and Killua are able to pass Hisoka's barrier on the 200th floor. Hisoka informs Gon that he'll only fight him after Gon has won a match on this level. Episode 41: Bandage x Blow x Last for Winning

The match between Hisoka and Katsutoro has ended rather bloodily (Hisoka throws his severed arm at Katsutoro and kills him). Machi sews on both of Hisoka's ripped-off arms, charging him a cool $70 million. Hisoka challenges Gon to his next match, where Gon manages to distract Hisoka and punch him in the face. Hisoka, smiling, accepts his old Hunter badge from Gon.
